Consumer Sentiment
Definition
The University of Michigan's Consumer Survey Center questions 500 households each month on their financial conditions and attitudes about the economy. Consumer sentiment is directly related to the strength of consumer spending. Consumer confidence and consumer sentiment are two ways of talking about consumer attitudes. Among economic reports, consumer sentiment refers to the Michigan survey while consumer confidence refers to The Conference Board's survey.  Why Investors Care

Released on 7/1/05 For Jun 2005
Sentiment Index, Level
 Actual 96.0
 Consensus 94.5
 Consensus Range 93.5  to  95.5

Highlights
The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index added to its strong gain in the first part of June, posting a final 96.0 for the month compared to a mid-month reading of 94.8 and against 86.9 in May. The reading confirms similar strength in Tuesday's report from the Conference Board. Consumer sentiment, put in a brief tailspin by high gas prices in early spring, is beginning to strengthen, perhaps part of the economic firmness that the FOMC cited yesterday. Financial markets showed no reaction to the data.

Market Consensus Before Announcement
At mid-month, the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index jumped nearly 8 points to reach 94.8, its highest level since January. Gasoline prices haven't fallen much - perhaps consumers are becoming accustomed to paying more at the gas pump lately.

Consumer sentiment Consensus Forecast for June 05: 94.5
Range: 93.5 to 95.5
Trends
[Chart] Consumer sentiment is mainly affected by inflation and employment conditions. However, consumers are also impacted by current events such as bear & bull markets, geopolitical events such as war and terrorist attacks. Investors monitor consumer sentiment because it tends to have an impact on consumer spending over the long run (although not necessarily on a monthly basis.)
