Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain stores reported sharply higher sales in March that reflect an Easter calendar shift. This Easter, sales were concentrated in March while last year they were concentrated in April. Comments on weather were mixed but many chains complained that heavy weather hurt sales of seasonal goods. As with most years, March and April have to be taken together when judging chain-store sales, and most chains remain guarded, projecting only a moderate to mild increase. The Commerce Department releases March retail trade data on Monday.
