Highlights
Chain stores reported an uptick in October sales, posting on average a roughly 3% same-store year-on-year sales gain compared to a 2% gain in October.
Many chains said warmer weather in the month helped sales of seasonal goods, which had backed up on shelves with the record warmth of September. Stores with operations in Florida reported wide closings, most temporary, because of Hurricane Wilma. Overall, many chains still reported light traffic, the result of high gas prices that are cutting back on consumer shopping trips.
The results contrast with the plunge in the month's vehicle sales, suggesting that the consumer's non-discretionary shopping patterns remain intact. Next week will see the Commerce Department's definitive total on retail trade, which are likely to show mild strength in non-auto categories.
