Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain-stores reported mostly soft results with same-store year-on-year sales growth trending at about 2%, roughly 1 percentage point lower than trend.

Though Hurricanes Katrina and Rita were factors in the month, lost sales were largely made up at surrounding stores.

Two clear negatives were high gas prices, which siphoned off discretionary sales, and warm weather, which depressed sales of seasonal goods.

The results point to flat results for next week's non-auto, non-gas retail sales component. Still the results were perhaps not as bad as suspected given havoc from the hurricanes. Shares of retailers were mostly higher Thursday morning.
