Of all the small sample surveys, the one that has consistently shown the least amount of exceptional strength has now joined the others. The manufacturing PMI for final April came in at 56.5 for the highest score since September 2014. Looking for capacity stress? It's here with both input costs and selling prices accelerating to the strongest pace since mid-2011. And the sample concedes that the pressure on prices, at least to an extent, is due to metal tariffs imposed in March. Another possible sign of stress is a softening in job creation which may indicate that the PMI's sample is having a hard time finding new people. Up at 10:00 a.m. ET is the ISM manufacturing sample which has been reporting exceedingly strong conditions for the past year.

Consensus Outlook
The PMI manufacturing index is expected to come in at a final of 56.5 in April, unchanged from the mid-month flash and well up from March. Orders have been running at multi-year highs and, in a sign of capacity stress, delivery times have been lengthening sharply.

Based on monthly questionnaire surveys of selected companies, the Purchasing Managers' Manufacturing Index (PMI) offers an advance indication on month-to-month activity in the private sector economy by tracking changes in variables such as output, new orders, stock levels, employment and prices across manufacturing industries. The final index for the current month is released roughly a week after the flash.  Why Investors Care
