Domestic Vehicle Sales13.2 M12.8 M12.7 M to 13.1 M13.0 M

Unit vehicle sales proved soft in May, at a 16.9 million annualized rate vs 17.2 million in April. Sales of domestic-made vehicle edged lower to a 13.0 million rate with imports also slightly lower at 3.9 million. These results do not point to a positive contribution from vehicles for the May retail sales report. Vehicle sales in dollar terms have been mostly flat this year and rose only 0.1 percent in April.

Consensus Outlook
A 17.1 million annualized rate is the consensus for unit vehicle sales in May, a respectable outcome that would compare with 17.2 million in April and hint at a constructive month for retail sales and consumer spending in general.

Unit sales of motor vehicles, published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis at the beginning of each month, include domestic sales and imports. Domestics are sales of autos produced in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Imports are U.S. sales of vehicles produced elsewhere. The data track all passenger cars and light trucks up to 14,000 pounds gross weight (including minivans and sport utility vehicles). Though totals include a relatively small portion sold to businesses, motor vehicle sales are good indicators of trends in consumer spending and often are considered a leading indicator at business cycle turning points.  Why Investors Care
