If it weren't for aircraft, factory orders would not have looked very solid at the headline level. Orders showed only modest strength excluding transportation and, in a special setback for first-quarter GDP, outright contraction for capital goods.
The Dow eased off its strong pace, edging 0.2 percent lower to 20,954. Interest rates were little changed but the dollar index climbed, up 0.3 percent to 101.66.
