PMI Manufacturing Index
Released On 1/3/2017 9:45:00 AM For Dec, 2016
Level54.1 54.3

December was a solid month for Markit Economics' U.S. manufacturing sample where the composite finishes at 54.3 for a 1 tenth gain from mid-month and a 2 tenths gain from November. The report describes both new orders and production as remaining "robust" and leading to a year-and-a-half high for hiring. The strength is especially reflected in pre-production inventories which posted a 2-1/2 year high. Strength is also reflected in prices where input costs are on the rise and selling prices, though modest, showing some traction. Negatives include slow growth for exports tied to the strength in the dollar. Watch for the ISM report later this morning at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Based on monthly questionnaire surveys of selected companies, the Purchasing Managers' Manufacturing Index (PMI) offers an advance indication on month-to-month activity in the private sector economy by tracking changes in variables such as output, new orders, stock levels, employment and prices across manufacturing industries. The final index for the current month is released roughly a week after the flash.  Why Investors Care
