Treasury Budget
Released On 8/10/2017 2:00:00 PM For Jul, 2017
Treasury Budget - Level$-90.2 B$-42.9 B

Ten months into fiscal 2017, the government's deficit, at $566.0 billion, is running a sizable 10.6 percent above the prior fiscal year. Spending is where the red ink lies, up $115.1 billion so far this year including a $23.5 billion increase in Social Security payments and a $17.9 billion increase in net interest, the latter reflecting comparatively high payments for U.S. Treasuries. Receipts are up $41.2 billion this year led by higher receipts for individual taxes.

The U.S. Treasury releases a monthly account of the surplus or deficit of the federal government. Changes in the budget balance reflect Federal policy on spending and taxation. The government's fiscal year begins in October.  Why Investors Care
