Highlights
The energy sector continues to come alive based on the Dallas Fed report where the general activity index came in at a very strong 16.9 in March with production at 18.6. These readings do point to less growth this month but compared against unusually strong readings in February. New orders are also solid, at 9.5 though unfilled orders are at flat, at 0.1. Delivery times are slowing which points to congestion in the supply chain while inventories are flat. Costs and prices both show continued though easing pressure. Continued optimism in the 6-month outlook is another feature of this report. But strength in regional reports really hasn't translated yet to similar strength in actual factory data out of Washington.

Recent History Of This Indicator
The Dallas Fed general activity index has emerged from 2-1/2 years of deep contraction with surging strength that points to recovery for the energy sector. At a consensus 22.0 in March, forecasters see the general activity index holding on to the bulk its enormous February surge to 24.5.

Definition
The Dallas Fed conducts this monthly survey of manufacturers in Texas regarding their operations in the state. Participants from across the state represent a variety of industries. In the latter half of the month, the questions for the manufacturing survey are electronically transmitted to respondents and answers are collected over a few days. About 100 manufacturers regularly participate in the Dallas Fed survey, which began collecting data in mid-2004. Participants are asked whether various indicators have increased, decreased or remained unchanged. Answers cover changes over the previous month and expectations for activity six months into the future. The breakeven point for each index is zero with positive numbers indicating growth and negative numbers reflecting decline.  Why Investors Care
