Store Sales Y/Y change2.8 %2.7 %

Same store sales were up 2.7 percent year-on-year in the August 5 week, only slightly off the strong pace of the prior week, which tied the June 17 week for the best year-on-year gain since January 2016. Although month-to-date same store sales were down 0.3 percent versus the previous month, it was the strongest reading in 5 weeks for a comparison that has been negative since the July 8 week. And posting the biggest gain in at least 2 years, full month same store sales were up 2.7 percent year-on-year. Redbook's same store sample survey shows retailers reporting that the upswing in sales seen since the second half of June is still intact, and points to continuing strength for ex-auto less-gas retail sales.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
