Store Sales Y/Y change1.4 %1.0 %

Same store sales were up 1.0 percent year-on-year in the March 4 week in a slowdown from the 1.4 percent growth pace reached in the prior week. Month-to-date monthly same store sales showed more significant deterioration versus the previous month and were down a sharp 0.8 percent after a 0.7 percent gain in the previous week. Year-on-year, however, retailers in the Redbook sample reported monthly sales that were 1.0 percent higher than last year, keeping up the strongest pace of the year set in the previous week. Same store sales for Redbook's sample have shown a moderate recovery from January doldrums in recent weeks, but the more robust 2 percent year-on-year weekly sale growth briefly seen at the end of December appears to be a longer-term peak.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
